This live course will include lectures, hands-on workshops, interactive question and answer sessions, that aim to provide an overview of pediatric musculoskeletal conditions and sports-related injuries that are commonly encountered by Primary Care Providers. This course aims to provide a comprehensive learning experience that will improve providers’ knowledge, skills, and competence in managing specific conditions. In addition, participants can look forward to learning about our multidisciplinary approach to managing pediatric musculoskeletal and sports-related conditions through evidence-based practices.

Course Chairs
Celina de Borja, MD
Dr. Celina de Borja is a pediatrician with special training in sports medicine who cares for children and young adults with a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. In addition to general pediatric orthopedics, her areas of interest include sports and dance medicine, injury prevention and bone health.
Originally from the Philippines, de Borja earned her medical degree from University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center. She completed her pediatric residency through Hackensack Meridian Health at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, then completed a fellowship in sports medicine through Harvard Medical School at Boston Children’s Hospital. During her fellowship in Boston, de Borja served as team physician for the women’s field hockey and basketball teams at Northeastern University and for the football team at Newton South High School; she was also a consulting physician for Boston Ballet School and Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music.
De Borja has been an active medical volunteer with RunSafe, serving at various sporting events in the Bay Area. She also volunteers at the ODC Dance Commons Healthy Dancers’ Clinic, which aims to improve the well-being and health of the dance community through education, musculoskeletal screening and integration of health services.
Rhonda Watkins, MD MPH
Dr. Rhonda Watkins is a primary care sports medicine doctor. As a former track-and-field Olympian, she draws on her personal experiences with athletic training and injuries to shape the care she provides. She treats children and young adults with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. Her areas of particular interest include injury prevention, fractures, bone health and running injuries.
Watkins’ research interests include injury prevention, gait retraining and the impact of social media on athletes.
Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Watkins earned her medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada. She completed a residency in pediatrics at UCSF and a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. During her fellowship, she served as team doctor for Northeastern University and Middlesex School, and as consulting doctor for Boston Ballet School. She also provided medical coverage for many local events, including the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, Boston Ballet’s “The Nutcracker,” the BAA Half Marathon and pre-participation physical exams at Emmanuel College. She has a master’s degree in public health from the University of California, Los Angeles.
As an athlete, Watkins had an extraordinary career in track and field. She was a long jumper and high jumper on UCLA’s track-and-field team, becoming an NCAA champion and several-time All-American. As a member of Trinidad and Tobago’s national athletic team, she competed in multiple international track-and-field meets, including the 2008 Summer Olympics. She holds her team’s national record for the long jump.
Thomas Clennell, PT DPT
Thomas Clennell is a physical therapist who specializes in sports medicine. He works with injured young athletes to develop and implement treatment plans that help them return safely to their chosen sport. His specialties include care for youths recovering from surgery; post-concussion care; and care for those who play overhead sports (in which the upper arm and shoulder reach above and behind the head), including baseball, softball, swimming, volleyball and water polo. He has provided physical therapy for young people in Oakland for more than 10 years.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in integrative biology at the University of California, Berkeley, Clennell earned a doctor of physical therapy degree at Samuel Merritt University. He is a certified specialist in sports physical therapy and has served as a consultant to trainers from the National Football League and National Basketball Association to help players recover from concussions. Clennell is a lifelong Bay Area resident who wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
After participating in this activity, clinicians should be able to:
- Apply new knowledge in the identification of common pediatric musculoskeletal conditions and in basic evaluation and management.
- Refine the way I work with different healthcare professionals based on an improved understanding of their scope of practice, including physicians, nurses, PAs, physical therapists, and athletic trainers; and apply strategies for fostering more effective communication channels to better facilitate referrals between healthcare professionals which optimize patient care and experience.
- Apply improved competence in recognizing communication deficits in interprofessional healthcare team and develop and implement communication strategies in real-time to enhance team-based approaches in pediatric musculoskeletal care.
- Use a continuous learning plan designed during the course to assist me in remaining current with evolving guidelines and practices in pediatric musculoskeletal and sports medicine.
